Joys of Caravanning

URGENT MESSAGE FOR ANYONE LIKELY TO WANT TO TRAVEL ALONG THROUGH THE ARLBERG TUNNEL IN AUSTRIA BETWEEN THE TYROL AND VORALBERG.                                                                                                                                                                                                    THIS TUNNEL IS CLOSED BOTH WAYS FROM APRIL 18th 2017 TO 28th SEPTEMBER 2017  THIS ASFINAG SAYS IS THE LAST TIME IN THE NEAR FUTURE, THAT  THE TUNNEL WILL BE CLOSED AS ALL WORK WILL HAVE BEEN COMPLETED

This is the Wesbsite of ASFINAG the Austrian Highways Organisation which oversees the Austrian Autobahns, Tunnels and Vignettes including Go Box for all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.

To get to the information for the Tunnel on the above link below is a guide:-.

1.  Scroll down and click on small orange box on the right titles All       Constructions.

2.   Scroll down the Left Hand Box and next click on Voralberg.

3.  Then under the Map are 3 Titles click S 16 and on the next page scroll down to just above the first Video and the dates are confirmed there.

We travelled over the pass on June 5th 2015 and it was quite busy, lots of Lorries and Caravans.

But make a note the Arlberg Pass is open for Cars with Caravans, Motor Homes and Lorries Monday to Friday day and night but on

Saturday, Sunday, Bank and Religious Holidays you cannot drive with the above vehicles over the pass between 9 am and 6 pm.

If you are planning on making the journey over there are some very steep inclines both up and down.

Two recommendations are

1. Check on your water level before starting the journey.

2.  Check that you have  very excellent match of your outfit.                                                                                                                                                                               There are only 2 official lay bys on the way up from St. Anton and another rough area on a bend above the covered part of the pass after St Anton.  At the top St. Christophs there are a couple of cafe;s and shops.

Latest Info on using Car Cam's in Austria.  7th December 2016.

This is the latest info I have found on this subject that has been brought up on several Caravan Forums on the Web in the last few days saying it was illegal to have a Dash Cam in Austria.  This is not true if using for personal purposes taking video's of your trip etc.,  If you had an accident you would not be able to use it for info for Police or Insurance purposes in Austria.  If putting on You tube etc you must make sure number plates etc of other vehicles are blotted out.

Conclusion: Dash-Cams / Action-Cams are not in principle / in itself forbidden. It depends on the use of this unit. If you use the camera only, for example, to make a private recording of an interesting journey, almost like a short vacation video, does not object (because this is not a systematic and continuous / permanent monitoring). Please note, however, that no personality rights are violated. If you provide / display such a video to others, all persons and markings have to be made unrecognisable. In addition to the aspects of data protection and the protection of privacy, copyright infringement may still come into play in the case of the non-authorised distribution of such a video. Latest News for travelling to Europe.  23rd January, 2016.              Belgian Border Control between Belgium and France.

The Belgium government announced on Tuesday, February 23, the temporary restoration controls at the border with France, to be faced with a possible influx of migrants leaving the "jungle" of Calais , a vast camp near the French entrance to the tunnel la Mancha, which could be partly closed soon.

Some 250 to 290 police officers will be deployed and permanently on the French-Belgian border, announced the Belgian Minister for the Interior, Jan Jambon, during a press conference. First tests have already occurred Monday night, leading to the "interception" of 32 people in Adinkerke , said Minister.

NEW REGULATIONS ON TRAVELLING WITH EUROTUNNEL. FROM APRIL 1st  2015.

Anyone who has a booking on Eurotunnel whether Direct or through the Caravan Club travelling after 1st April will need to go onto the Tunnel Website  here and fill in the form with Passport details for all travelling in your vehicle before departure to the Tunnel..This should eliminate any delays when you get to the Tunnel Passport Control.  Below is a statement from the Overseas Department of the Caravan Club.

NEW FERRY PASSPORT REGULATIONS. APRIL 2015

If you have booked a Ferry Crossing you do not need to supply the Passport information Form as the Tunnel. The information will be collected at the Port when you check-in.

This will obviously lead to long queues so you would be advised to arrive in plenty of time for your crossing.

2014 ENGLISH TV FINDINGS IN EUROPE.

Details of our findings for UK Television in Europe now after the smaller footprint.   We managed to get all SKY, BBC ITV English Speaking on Sky Plus HD  Box at Bitburg but past there, nothing OK when we called back here on way home.  Could not get a peep out of it anywhere else,  We were lucky to get Sky News, CNN, True Movies 1 and 2 and a few more programs in English with our Easy Find Digital Satellite Receiver SL30/12 and the 80 cms Satellite Dish.  Luckily we could get Orf 1 and 2 Austrian TV on our Caravan Aerial so could watch Formula 1.

Trip 11 With the Caravan this time.

We have made the decision, not to sell the caravan, and visit Europe once more. Details of this will be under 11th Trip Europe 2014.

6th April, 2014.   NEW CL TYPE CAMPSITE IN HUNGARY RECENTLY OPENED BY ENGLISH COUPLE..

It has been brought to my notice that a British Couple have set  up a CL Type Campsite in Hungary  just a few miles, 30 minutes, South or Lake Balaton.   Here is a link to their Wesbsite.   This Couple have recently moved from the UK and understand they are the first English people to open a Campsite in Western Hungary.

I would be very much obliged if and when anyone visits this Campsite they could send me a review that I can post on this Website.

Thank you Dianne

The Caravan before the cover put on Autumn 2013.

25th July 2013.

Today 25th July 2013 after 7 months , a long wait,  the caravan was picked up and taken to have its new front axle fitted.  The loading took 1. 3/4 hours and as you see by the picture there was a lot of overhang.  Had the caravan been 2" wider it would have been too wide for the ramp of the transporter.

I can now understand more why UK Breakdown Organizations will not insure the wider longer vans.   So unsuitable sized low loaders in the UK.   Pleased we are with ADAC when travelling in Europe where the transporters are able to move a caravan such as ours when it cannot be towed.  Below is a photo.

Cause of this replacement of front axle was due to last year hitting something on the Motorway which caused a blowout thus putting the tracking out causing wear of tyres which we did not notice till putting the van to bed in December. So all Spring and Summer without a Caravan.

2013/2014 Up Date.

Well it is time to plan next years 2014 European Tour and the good news is it will be WITH the CARAVAN unlike last year.  The Caravan is looking good with its new axle all fitted and even though it has not been used since August 2012.  At the moment all under its winter coat.

Route over the Fernpass in Austria.

It has officially been verified by OAMTC the Austrian equivalent of AA or ADAC. that the route over the Fernpass is now passable by Cars with Caravans due to vast improvements.
